Er zählt mit einer Flügelspannweite von bis zu 2,9 Metern zu den größten flugfähigen Vögeln der Welt. Mit 225 bis 250 Brutpaaren ist der Bartgeier einer der seltensten Greifvögel Europas. Türkçe: Kara kuş (Gypaetus barbatus), atmacagiller (Accipitridae) familyasından Gypaetus cinsine ait olan tek tür. Eski Dünya akbabalarından olan kara kuş, 95-125 cm boyunda ve 235-280 cm kanat açıklığındadırlar. Kuyruk ve kanatlar gridir. Genç bireyler tamamen koyu renktir, ergin tüylerine kavuşması yaklaşık 5 yıl alır. (Alpenzoo, Avusturya, 2007)
